Avoiding the Biggest Jokes in Business Strategy: What the Smart Owners Never Fall For
There’s a thin line between bold business strategy… and a punchline.
I’ve seen owners pour time, money, and energy into moves that looked brilliant on paper—until reality hit. And suddenly, that “next big thing” turned into a running gag with a painful price tag.
Now don’t get me wrong—I’m all for learning through experience. But if you’ve been in business long enough, you start to notice that most of these so-called strategies? They’re recycled. And the punchlines? Predictable.
Since it’s April Fool’s, I figured we’d have a little fun—but we’re not laughing at you. We’re laughing at the mistakes we’ve all made at some point. More importantly, we’re going to dig into how to avoid these traps and lead with strategy that actually works.
Joke #1: “We Don’t Need a Plan—We’ve Got Gut Feelings!”
Let me introduce you to Robert. Sharp guy. Runs a great service business. One day, he decides to launch a new offer—no research, no projections, no systems. Just a “gut feeling” that it’ll work.
Three weeks in, he's burned through a few thousand in ad spend and his team is scrambling to deliver something nobody fully understands.
And the worst part? He’s too embarrassed to ask why it isn’t working.
👉 The smarter move: Gut feelings aren’t bad—but they should support a plan, not replace one. When you lead with structure, you free yourself to make creative, strategic decisions with confidence. Otherwise, you’re just gambling with nicer words.
Joke #2: “If We Just Get More Clients, Everything Will Work Out”
Connie, another business owner I work with, was growing fast. Too fast. She kept stacking on clients, thinking revenue growth was the answer to all her problems.
Except her ops couldn’t keep up. Her team was stressed. Onboarding lagged. And quality? Let’s just say her five-star reviews started dipping into the low threes.
She was burning herself—and her business—out in the name of “growth.”
👉 The smarter move: Growth should be sustainable, not survival mode. If your systems and delivery can’t scale with your sales, all you’re doing is multiplying your stress (and your refunds).
Joke #3: “If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It”
This one always starts the same. “We’ve done it this way for years.” Sure. And it probably worked… years ago. But now? The process is clunky, your team is frustrated, and customers are quietly drifting toward competitors who are a little faster, a little smoother, a little more thoughtful.
The truth is, “not broken” is not the same as high-functioning.
👉 The smarter move: Audit your systems regularly. Ask your team where the friction is. Ask your clients what they wish worked better. If you don’t evolve, you stagnate. And if you stagnate long enough, you’ll be asking why no one stuck around.
Joke #4: “Let’s Just Do What They’re Doing”
One of the most expensive strategies I’ve ever seen: copycatting.
A client once tried to mimic a competitor’s high-ticket funnel because it “looked successful.” They duplicated the entire thing—emails, layout, offer tiers—without realizing the competitor had a completely different team, brand, and audience. It bombed.
The problem wasn’t the funnel—it was the lack of fit.
👉 The smarter move: Don’t chase someone else’s shiny object. Borrow ideas, sure—but make them fit your business model, your resources, and your customers.
Imitation isn’t a strategy. It’s a shortcut to confusion.
Don’t Be the Punchline
These aren’t just funny little business fumbles—they’re the kind of missteps that quietly erode confidence, profit, and growth. And we’ve all made them at some point.
The key isn’t avoiding every mistake. It’s recognizing when a strategy has turned into a joke—and knowing how to shift before it blows up your momentum.
So here’s my challenge to you:
- Where might you be running a strategy that no longer serves you?
- Which part of your business is still running on hope instead of structure?
- What are you copying or clinging to that doesn’t really fit anymore?
If any of that hits a little too close to home, good. That means you’re paying attention.
